What Are PTR Records?

PTR records are a type of DNS record that provides a domain name for an IP address. A PTR record is the opposite of an A record where a query for a domain name returns an IP address. With a PTR record, a query for an IP address returns a domain name.

When do I use a PTR record?

A PTR record is used for reverse DNS. Reverse DNS has several uses. For example, it can provide a way for a recipient of a mail address to verify that the IP address where the email comes from matches the domain name provided in the email.
