How to Set a Domain to Lapse When You Plan Not to Renew It¶
If you manage a large portfolio of domain names you are likely to have several domains in your portfolio that you do not intend to renew. It can be helpful to separate these domain names from your main collection. At Gandi, you can do this by specifying that you want to allow a domain to lapse.
Setting a domain to lapse will do three things:
Disable auto renewal for the domain if activated.
Hide the domain from your main list of domains. You will still be able to find these domains using a filter.
Stop all unnecessary end of life warning from being sent. Warnings mandated by the registry will still be sent, but these warnings will be minimized as much as possible.
Warning
Domains that will expire within the next ten days cannot be marked to lapse, since it will be too late for all the above changes to take effect. Likewise, domains set to lapse cannot change status within ten days of the expiration date. You can still renew these domains manually in your account, however, which will also remove the lapse.
Warning
If you set a domain that has automatic renewal to lapse, then remove that lapse status, automatic renewal will not be automatically reinstated. You will need to reactivate automatic renewal for that domain.
Set a Single Domain to Lapse¶
You can set a single domain to lapse by going to that domain’s overview page.
After logging in, click “Domain” in the left menu bar.
Click the name of the domain you want to lapse.
Scroll down to the section “Let a domain lapse” and click “Manage”
Read the warning then click “Let the domain lapse”.
To remove the lapse for a single domain you can repeat the same steps, selecting the option to return the domain to a normal lifecycle. To remove the lapse you can follow the same steps and select “Disable domain lapse feature” in the final step. Remember that lapse disables automatic renewal, so you may also want to also reactivate this feature after removing the lapse.
Set Multiple Domains to Lapse¶
You can set multiple domains to lapse using advanced view.
After logging in, click “Domain” in the left menu bar.
If you are not already in advanced view click “Advanced view” near the top of the domain list.
Click the check box next to all the domains you want to lapse.
In the bottom menu that appears click “Configure”.
Click “Allow the domains to lapse”.
To remove the lapse you can follow the same steps and select “Disable domain lapse feature” in the final step. Remember that lapse disables automatic renewal, so you may also want to also reactivate this feature after removing the lapse.
View Domains Set to Lapse¶
Domains set to lapse are hidden from the regular domain list, but you can view them using a filter.
After logging in, click “Domain” in the left menu bar.
Click “Filter” next to the search bar in the domain list to select filter options.
Under “Show domains allowed to lapse” select either “Lapsed only” to see only domains set to lapse or “All domains” to see all domains including domains set to lapse.
