How to Register a Domain Name for Someone Else

When purchasing any Gandi product as an organization you have the ability to purchase Gandi products on behalf of another person or organization. You will be billed for the product, but the person who you purchased the product for will be listed as the official owner of the product.

This feature is designed to allow a business to purchase products, such as domain names, for a client while making sure legal ownership of the domain remains with the client.

Warning

An account being used by an individual, which is not configured as an organization with Gandi, cannot purchase products for another individual or organization.

To purchase for another user with a separate account follow these steps. The intended owner should already have their own Gandi account.

  1. Find the product you wish to purchase and add it to your shopping cart.

  2. Click the shopping cart in the top right corner to start the checkout process.

  3. On the first page of the checkout process click on the arrow in the top right corner of the “Product owner” box to choose an existing organization or individual as the owner of your product.

  4. Complete the checkout process as normal.

If you create a new organization during the checkout process your username will be added to the admin team of that organization. The person you listed as owner of the organization will be in the owner team.

Additional options are available if the intended owner uses teams to manage an organization. The purchaser can be added to a team, and then the owner can choose what permissions to grant to the purchaser, including permissions to buy new products or pay for orders.

When the owner gets the invitation to join the new organization they can first log in to an existing Gandi username to have their existing account linked to the new organization. Or, if they do not already have an account, they will be able to create a username when they accept the invitation.

Warning

Due to regulations from ICANN, the email of the owner of the domain must be confirmed within 15 days or the domain name may be placed on hold.
