Authorization Code (EPP code)

An authorization code (also known as an EPP code, EPP transfer code, transfer code, auth code, etc.) is a code provided by your current registrar when transferring a domain name to a different registrar. If the domain name requires an authorization code, you will be asked for it during the transfer process to your new registrar.

You can find it using the following steps:

  1. Log in to your account.
  2. Select “Domains” in the left menu bar.
  3. Select the domain you plan to transfer.
  4. Click on the “Transfer out” tab for that domain.
  5. Click “Copy” to copy the code, or click “Generate a new key”.
  6. Provide the code to your new registrar when requested.

Note

Not all extensions use the authorization code, while others provide it using other means, such as by email. Please contact support if you need assistance figuring out how to complete a transfer.

Special Cases

Domains in .uk, .co.uk, .org.uk, and .me .uk do not use an authorization code. Nominet, the registrar for these domains, uses an Internet Provider Security tag, also known as an IPS tag or Nominet Provider tag, to identify the registrars involved in the transfer. During a transfer you must change your IPS tag from Gandi to your new registrar.

To change the IPS tag:

  1. Log in to your account.
  2. Select “Domains” in the left menu bar.
  3. Select the domain you plan to transfer.
  4. Click on the “Transfer out” tab for that domain.
  5. Enter the new TAG for the registrar you wish to transfer to.
  6. Click “Change registrar”.

Warning

Submitting the TAG initiates the transfer process, so be sure you are ready for the transfer before taking this step. You should have already contacted the new registrar and followed any steps they require. Also, make sure you information is up to date since changing information (such as an email address) after the transfer starts is much more difficult.
