How to Set Up Recovery Options for Your Gandi Account

Recovery options are methods you can use to recover access to your account if you forget your password. By default, you can always use your security email to gain access to your account. You also have the option of using a phone number, a QR code, or a security key.

If you provide multiple recovery options we may request that you provide verification via these methods in order to provide a higher level of security for your account.

Note

Recovery options cannot bypass other security methods you may have activated. Contact our support team if you need help accessing your account due to a lost security method.

If you have forgotten your username or password, you can find help on our page :ref:<forgotten_password>.

Recovery by Email

When you use email to recover your account we will send a code to one of the emails you have provided. You will then enter that code to gain access to your account.

You can add up to five email addresses to be used as recovery options. The code will be sent to a randomly selected email from this list. It is important that you have easy access to each email you add as a recovery option.

Important

The email containing the code will also contain your username. Do not list an email address where you would not be comfortable receiving this information.

You can add emails by following these steps:

  1. To access your user settings click on your username in the top right corner of the page. Select “User Settings” from the drop down menu.

  2. In the user settings screen find the section “Login and Security Options” and click on “Recovery options”.

  3. Click the green “Add Email” and enter the email in the form.

  4. An email will be sent to the new email address with a six digit code. Open the email to view the code, then enter the code into the prompt on the recovery options page to validate the email address. You can choose not to validate the new email right away, but when you return you will need to resend the code by clicking the green paper airplane icon, since the original code will have expired.

When your email is validated it will have the status “Active”. If the email has the status “Pending” you can resend the code by clicking the green paper airplane icon. You can delete an active or pending email by clicking on the red trash icon.

Note

It is not possible to delete the final email address. The security email associated with your account will always appear in this list.

Recovery by SMS

When you use a phone number to recover your account we will send an SMS to one of the phone numbers you have provided. You will then enter that code to gain access to your account.

You can add up to three phone numbers. We will send the code to a randomly selected number from this list. You should only use phone numbers where you can easily access text messages.

You can add phone numbers by following these steps:

  1. To access your user settings click on your username in the top right corner of the page. Select “User Settings” from the drop down menu.

  2. In the user settings screen find the section “Login and Security Options” and click on “Recovery options”.

  3. Click the green “Add a phone number” and enter the phone number in the form.

  4. An SMS message will be sent to the new phone number with a six digit code. Open the message to view the code then enter the code into the prompt on the recovery options page to validate the number. You can choose not to validate the new phone number right away, but when you return you will need to resend the code by clicking the green paper airplane icon, since the original code will have expired.

When your phone number is validated it will have the status “Active”. If the phone number has the status “Pending” you can resend the code by clicking the green paper airplane icon. You can delete an active or pending email by clicking on the red trash icon.

Recovery by QR Code

When you use a QR code to recover your account you will be asked to scan a specific QR code generated by Gandi. You can only have a single QR code active at any time.

You can add QR codes by following these steps:

  1. To access your user settings click on your username in the top right corner of the page. Select “User Settings” from the drop down menu.

  2. In the user settings screen find the section “Login and Security Options” and click on “Recovery options”.

  3. Click the green “Generate a QR code”.

  4. A PDF with the QR code will be generated. Depending on your browser settings, the file may open as a tab in your browser or you may simply be asked if you want to save the file without opening it. Once you have the file, you can save it as a file on your phone or computer. You can also print a copy if you would like.

Important

Each time you click “Generate a QR code” a new code is generated. It is important to replace any old QR code files with the new one since old files will no longer work.

You can disable an existing QR code by clicking on the red trash can icon.

Recovery by Security Key

A security key is a physical device, such as a FIDO key, that you can use as an added method of protection when logging into an account. You can also use a security key as a part of your normal login process.

You can add QR codes by following these steps:

  1. To access your user settings click on your username in the top right corner of the page. Select “User Settings” from the drop down menu.

  2. In the user settings screen find the section “Login and Security Options” and click on “Recovery options”.

  3. If you have already added a security key as a second factor authentication for loggin in, it will appear in the list and you can click the plus icon to also use it as a recovery option. Otherwise, click the green “Add security key”.

  4. When the dialog box appears you have the option to check “Use this security key every time I log in” to use it for logins as well. “Use this security key as a recovery option” will already be checked by default.

  5. Enter a name for your security key and proceed with the set up process.

You can disable an existing security key by clicking on the red trash icon. This will only remove the security key as a recovery option. If you want to also remove it from the login process you will need to remove it from the list of security keys used for MFA in the “Authentication options” section.
