Getting Started with Sieve

Sieve is straightforward to use. The basic principle is that you edit a file on our mail server that contains the filters you create for your specific email address.

1. Choose a Sieve Application

You will want to use an application to help you eaisly access, write, and modify the file that is stored on our mail server that contains your filters.

Tipp

For Thunderbird users, the „Sieve“ add-on by Thomas Schmidt works great for this, though you can search for different ones if needed or desired.

There is a list of some other Sieve applications mentioned at http://sieve.info/clients

2. Activate Sieve for your email address

Once you have chosen the Sieve application that you want to use, you need to be sure that it is able to connect to your email mailbox.

If you use the Sieve Thunderbird extension, this is done automatically: you just need to choose „Sieve Message Filters“ in the Thnuderbird „Tools“ menu, and from there, chose the email address for which you want to edit filters from the „Filters for“ menu.

Otherwise, here is the connection information:

  • Host: mail.gandi.net

  • port: 4190

  • login: the full email address (ex. you@example.com) in question

  • password: this is the password of the email address in question

After this is done, and you have agreed to activate Sieve for the email address, you are then able to write and edit your Sieve message filter file.
