Forwarding and Alias Addresses

Creating an email forwarding address

Forwarding addresses make it possible to redirect mail from one or more of your domain’s email addresses to an external address, such as when you want mail that is sent to something@yourdomain.com to something@yourusualemail.com.

The emails must be retrieved from the external mail account they have been forwarded to.

Before creating the forwarding address, verify that you are using Gandi’s MX servers see how to manage your DNS records). This is required so that mail can be routed through servers Gandi.

Once you are sure that your domain is using our MX records:

  1. choose the domain name from the list of your domains that will have the new forwarding addresses,

  2. click on „Email“ in the navigation menu,

  3. click on the „Forwarding“ option.

If you don’t yet have any forwarding addresses, you will see the option to „Create your first forwarding address“.

Creating a mailbox alias

Unlike a forwarding address, where the address forwards the emails to an address on a different domain name (ex. to a gmail address etc.), an alias will forward (or better, make available) the mails to an address on the same domain name.

To add an alias:

  1. choose the domain name from the list of your domains that will have the alias address,

  2. click on „Email“ in the navigation menu,

  3. click on the pen icon“ of the email address that will have the new alias(es),

  4. enter the alias name in the „Aliases“ field. Please only put the name (ie. the part before the @ in the email address). You can add as many as you want, but they must be one per line.

Tipp

You can also use the character * to mean „everything“. For example if you put super* as the alias name, then emails sent to anything starting with „super“ (supercat@ supercomputer@ etc.) will be made available to to your mailbox.

When you are done, click „Submit“ at the bottom of the page to submit your changes.
