FAQ¶
Management¶
Can I get an export of my list of domains?¶
Yes, you can export your list of domains as a .CSV file. To do this:
switch to the „Table View“ of domains you have the permission to see,
click on the gear icon on the right of the table’s header,
select „Export to CSV.
You can then choose to open or save the csv file. This file contains all the administrative information about each domain name displayed in your list of domains.
Transfers¶
I need to relaunch the transfer and resend the confirmation mails¶
If you need to relaunch a domain name transfer because:
one or both of the owners did not reply before the deadline
you need to resend the confirmation emails due to an email change
This is possible from the domain’s transfer progress page (that you can access from your domain admin page).
Scroll down to step 5, and click on the round-arrow relaunch icon next to the email address that did not answer yet.
We will then recheck the email addresses (if they changed) and will resend the confirmation mails, while simultaneously relaunching the transfer for free.
How do I unlock my domain (remove the transfer protection)?¶
To unlock your domain for transfer away from Gandi, once you are in your domain’s administration page, click on „Transfer“ in the navigation menu. This will bring up the page where you can get remove the protection by clicking on “Remove transfer lock” (see the image above).
What if my domain is with a reseller?¶
If your domain name is managed by a reseller, you will need to see with their support team regarding this change, as they are the technical intermediary between you and Gandi.
They may be able to transfer your domain for you. Otherwise, you should ask them about ‚releasing‘ your handle, which would allow you to log in to our site to manage your domain.
I’m not receiving the verification email¶
For some extension, after successfully completing the transfer process at the new registrar (eg. accepting their transfer in confirmation mails and providing them with the auth code), we will send a outgoing confirmation email to the domain’s owner with these details:
Subject: [GANDI] IMPORTANT: Transfer of EXAMPLE.COM to another registrar From: ****-transfer-out@gandi.net
If you do not click the link in the emails, the transfer will be accepted automatically 5 days after it was launched successfully at the new registrar.
What if I change my mind?¶
Domains generally cannot be transferred within 60 days of registration or transfer. There is an exception, however: You can transfer back to the registrar you transferred away without having to wait the 60 days.
Deletion¶
How can I delete my domain?¶
Gandi does not force you to renew your domain names by default.
Consequently if you want to delete your domain name, you just need to not renew your domain. If you do not renew your domain, it will be deleted according to the natural deletion schedule of its extension. For a .com domain, this is 80 days after its expiration date, after which it becomes available for purchase on a first-come, first-served basis on the open market.
If you need to delete your domain name before its natural deletion date (i.e. for legal or emergency purposes), please send the domain name deletion form (and all the required proof of ID as listed on the instructions on the form) to Gandi by fax, email, or postal mail.
You can download the domain early deletion form here
Web Forwarding¶
Do I need to use LiveDNS¶
We recommend that you use liveDNS with this service. If you are not, the form will prompt you to switch, and will be sure your DNS records have the appropriate entry for the forwarding to work.
How long will it take for the changes to take effect?¶
It depends. If the zone file of the domain name you are forwarding already has an A record pointing to 217.70.184.38 or a CNAME record pointing to webredir.vip.gandi.net, then your change should take effect within a few minutes.
If a change must be made to the domain name’s zone file, it will require several hours for the change to take effect due to the DNS propagation delay.
How do I edit a web forwarding entry?¶
If you make a mistake, return to the domain’s list of forwarding addresses. You can update a forwarding address by clicking on the pencil icon on the right.
To remove a forwarding address, click the red trash bin icon to delete the entry.
DNS Records¶
Why are DNS records needed?¶
In order for your domain name („example.com“) or subdomain („something.example.com) to „work“ it is necessary that you tell it where to go to find the content such as a website.
Where can I edit my DNS resource records?¶
If you are using Gandi’s Live DNS, and if your domain is at Gandi, you can manage your DNS records from our interface.
Otherwise, you will need to contact your nameserver provider (which is frequently your web host), and modify your records on their interface.
How long does it take for my DNS records to work?¶
If you are using our LiveDNS, and if the record is new (it does not replace an old one on the same name) the change will be made in real time in our zone. You may need to wait a couple of hours, however, for the changes to be seen all over the internet, especially if you are replacing an existing records with a diffent value.
What DNS record types does Gandi’s LiveDNS support?¶
You can add the following DNS records to your domain via our website at Gandi if it uses our LiveDNS:
A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, NS, TXT, WKS, SRV, LOC, SPF, CAA, SSHFP, PTR, DNAME
In addition to the above, the following are also supported via our LiveDNS REST API,:
DS, TLSA, CDS
Do you have examples of DNS records?¶
Yes, you can see more about specific record types, along with examples, on the following pages:
Zonechecks¶
What is a zonecheck?¶
A zonecheck is a test that some registries run to see if the nameservers that you want to use with your domain name meet their requirements of use. In the event that the nameservers that you want to use do not pass the registry’s test, the registry will not allow the operation.
