How to Get Premium DNS and Add Extra Protection for Your Website’s DNS

Gandi’s Premium DNS service for business customers adds an extra level of protection against downtime in the event of an infrastructure incident or a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack. By using this service in addition to our LiveDNS nameservers, you will benefit from a third-party redundant DNS infrastructure, so you can be confident that your online services will remain available in the event of such an attack.

Note

Premium DNS is only available for our business customers (the domain owner should be a legal person–meaning a company, or other entity which has legal rights and is subject to obligations) and only on domains that use Gandi’s LiveDNS. Premium DNS is also not available for corporate domains which are managed manually.

Gandi’s Premium DNS service uses Cloudflare’s extended Anycast infrastructure as a redundant backup to our own, such that in the event of a massive incident or attack the impact will be mitigated and your digital activity will remain available.

Warning

Premium DNS works by using routing traffic to your site through specific nameservers. If you change the nameservers of your domain your Premium DNS service will be deactivated.

How to Subscribe to Premium DNS

You can subscribe to Premium DNS from the Nameserver tab of your domains using the steps outlined below.

  1. After logging in, click on “Domain” in the left navigation menu.

  2. Click on the name of the domain that you want to protect with Premium DNS.

  3. Click on the “Nameserver” tab of the domain.

  4. Click “Subscribe” under “Premium DNS.”

  5. Click on the checkout icon in the top right corner of the page.

  6. Complete the checkout process as normal.

Your subscription will be synced to expire at the same time as your domain name, and the cost will be calculated accordingly. Your website will remain available throughout the process with no downtime required.

How to Unsubscribe from Premium DNS

  1. After logging in, click on “Domain” in the left navigation menu.

  2. Click on the name of the domain currently using Premium DNS that you want to deactivate.

  3. Click on the “Nameserver” tab of the domain.

  4. Click “Unsubscribe” under “Premium DNS.”

After you unsubscribe you will receive a refund for the unused portion of your subscription. Our support team will contact you to confirm how to handle this refund.

Why was my Premium DNS service deactivated?

The Premium DNS service works by routing requests for your website through specific nameservers. Therefore, if you set your domain to use an external nameserver we will not be able to provide you with this service. If you accidentally deactivated your Premium DNS service you can reactivate it on the Nameserver tab for your domain.

How can I see all the domains currently using Premium DNS service?

In the list of domains in your account, found by clicking “Domain” after logging into your account, domains with Premium DNS activated will appear with a helmet icon next to the name. You can also filter your list in advanced view to show only domains that have Premium DNS activated.
